Living Room Floor Tiles

Tiling is no longer confined to kitchens and bathrooms. This project showcases the growing trend of using modern porcelain tiles to create a seamless, elegant, and practical foundation for the main living areas of a home. The client for this open-plan new build wanted a single, continuous flooring material that would flow from the entrance hallway, through the living room, and into the dining area, unifying the entire ground floor.

The chosen material was a high-specification, large-format (900x900mm) porcelain tile in a subtle, matte-finish concrete effect. The sheer size of these tiles immediately creates a sense of space and calm by minimising the number of grout lines. This expansive, near-seamless finish makes the entire floor feel larger and more cohesive.

However, installing Large Format Tiles (LFTs) is a highly technical discipline. The number one requirement is a perfectly flat and level subfloor. Any imperfection in the subfloor will result in "lippage"—uneven tile edges—and potential cracking. Our first step was to apply a self-levelling compound over the entire 80-square-metre area, creating a perfectly true "blank canvas."

Due to the weight and size of the tiles, our team used specialist suction-cup lifting systems for precise placement. For every single tile, we used a levelling-clip-and-wedge system to lock the tiles in place as the adhesive cured, guaranteeing a perfectly flat, "lippage-free" finish. Furthermore, tile is the perfect partner for underfloor heating, which was installed throughout this home. Tile is an excellent thermal conductor, radiating heat efficiently and evenly, making the floor feel incredibly comfortable underfoot.

The result is a stunning, contemporary, and incredibly practical living space. The floor is 100% waterproof, scratch-proof, stain-proof, and fade-proof. It will never trap the dust, pollen, or allergens that carpets do, and it easily withstands the traffic of a busy family home with pets. This floor is a long-term investment that combines minimalist beauty with maximum durability.
